There is a big disparity in prison literature today. While there are places that have a decent supply of books, most of them are in need of mostly everything and the ones who do have books cannot get the right ones. Some prisons just cannot get the textbooks they need or enough books for their law library.
This is however one of the main reason people are somewhat against inmates reading some of what they are allowed to read. It is not the fact that they are reading that people object to, but rather the material they are allowed to read. People think that because they are in prison and therefore being punished that they should not be allowed to read law books, erotic books, or other material that some find offensive.
In this country you might be "innocent until proven guilty" but if you are "proven guilty you are surely not innocent". Or at least that is the prevailing thought amongst most of society these days. The fact of the matter is that over the last year in Illinois alone there have been two people released from incarceration because they were later found to be innocent.
While it is usually extremely unlikely, there is concern that some of the more intelligent inmates might use these law books to gin the upper hand on the legal system and try to find a loop hole of sorts to get themselves a shorter term. Or worse yet, get themselves out of jail entirely. This being the case some people are against them reading such books.
While it is too hard to reflect on all that transpired the though of some is that at least the fact that they had access to a prison law library had mad things easier for their defense. It allowed them to help their lawyers and to keep up with what was happening on the outside with their appeal. Things like this are important for inmates, especially these.
So much so that they can influence others not to give to their book dilemma. When it comes down to it it sometimes takes the municipality that the jail resides in to take the initiative. In the cases that saw large donations or any donations of significance come into the jail systems they were all started by the government officials locally.
When murderer on death row is allowed to read legal books that detail court cases, there is a certain feeling amongst some people that they can use that information to delay their punishment. The truth is that nothing can delay such a punishment when they are just waiting to die and no amount of reading can help.
When prison literature is scarce it comes down to the people in the prison and the town surrounding the prison to help out. The inmates can do very little to help their situation because of their situation. But the people who watch them, feed them, and surround them can provide them with the means to better themselves even if just a little bit.
