How To Succeed In The FMCG Industry

The fast moving consumer goods sector is a great industry to choose to work in if you want to move up the career ladder quickly. Movement from an entry role position to a more senior role can happen quicker than in some other industries.

This brief article looks at the types of roles you may expect to see at various stages during your career within the FMCG industry. Once you begin your career in FMCG you will see exactly hoe many different avenues there are that are open to you.

When you enter the industry as an entry level professional you should expect to gain experience by working in at least two different roles. Roles you might wish to work in include sales reps, assistant brand managers, HR advisors or manufacturing supervisors.

At manager level you will probably work in another couple of roles which cover different areas in order to build up your experience in people management. Roles that are typical of this career stage are brand managers, purchasing managers, HR advisors and key accounts managers.

When you reach middle management level you need a range of experience amongst different roles, you will also find that international experience will become very important too. Typical roles at this stage include senior manufacturing managers, IT managers, senior category managers and business integration leaders.

The next stage in your career will be director level. In order to achieve this stage you will need an impressive regional track record as well as good people management skills, you will certainly have lots of international experience too. Typical roles at this level are global brand marketing manager, finance controller, plant managers and product directors.

When you have worked at director level for a few years you will hopefully progress into a senior director level role. Here you will be expected to make a big impact in the arena

When you reach senior director level you will naturally possess a wealth of knowledge and experience within the fast moving consumer goods industry. You will be required to take the initiative at this stage and feel comfortable making important decisions as well as having lots of experience within different markets. You will work in roles such as a senior vice president, regional director or global sales director.
