CBT is a highly practical approach to problem-solving. It aims to
change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are behind people's
difficulties, and so change the way they feel.
It is a tried and tested method of helping clients with it's focus to help clients look at their patterns and to find ways to change their behaviour through understanding, and examining their own behaviours in a rational way. Through therapy and "homework" clients learn to adopt different (more positive and rational) ways of thinking and behaving.
CBT addresses a number of psychological problems, most typically stress, anxiety, phobias and depression. The focus is on the here and now. CBT helps you to put negative thoughts into perspective and to start to think in a more realistic and constructive way.
NLP is the imaginative approach. It is "the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do." (NLP Academy).
NLP requires clients to create or recreate positive mental images and use these to achieve what they dream and wish for. It is based on the theory that using positive images and creating these sensory experiences helps clients to be motivated and achieve these dreams.
NLP can help clients to tune into their senses in certain situations to maximise their abilities and talents. This is similar to that of visualising or getting tunnel vision as an athlete.
SO WHICH ONE IS BEST?
This is my view on whether CBT or NLP is more effective. There are some similarities:
CBT is a practical approach that gives you a set of practical tools that you can use for life. It helps lead to a more balanced and positive state of mind.
The mechanical nature of some NLP techniques can often be criticised, and the lack of evidence of the effectiveness of NLP also leaves me with some reservation.
I do not doubt that used with other therapy methods and other tools that NLP can be effective, but as a model and successful therapy technique in itself; Cogntive Behavioural Therapy is more successful every time.

This is my view on whether CBT or NLP is more effective. There are some similarities:
- Both CBT and NLP focus on replacing negative thoughts with positive and rational ones
- Both recognise that thought processes affect our behaviours and therefore our moods
- Both models are used to create improved change in both our working and personal lives
