A state of hypnosis or trance is a very common occurrence for
most people. It has to do with when the unconscious mind has taken over,
and the conscious mind is in the background. There are various depths
of hypnosis, depending upon what the balance is between the conscious
and unconscious minds. When you are
in a conversation with a person and they seem zoned out, or not really present, they are in some level of a trance state. Or maybe you are driving your car, and all of a sudden you find yourself driving down some road you hadn't meant to turn down. Perhaps it's a familiar route you used to travel. When that happened, your mind left the present moment and drifted off into a mild state of hypnosis.
Much of what we do is from a very unconscious place, in which we are on autopilot, not consciously aware of what we are doing. That often happens when you are doing some repetitive kind of chore, like washing the dishes or watering your garden. When that happens, you are in a state of trance.
The way you relate in your relationships can also be coming from a trance state. This is sometimes especially true in relationships that bring up triggered emotions, such as anger, feeling disempowered, not respected, not good enough and so on. When that happens people have usually left the here-and-now, and are not really responding to that other actual person. They, instead, are reliving some childhood emotional pattern that has nothing to do with the present moment.
One way to describe the purpose of the NLP TimeLine process is to bring the client out of a dysfunctional trance. When a person comes in for an NLP TimeLine session it is because they are experiencing some problem in their life - perhaps it's a relationship issue, or it has to do with self-esteem or their financial situation. There is some form of dysfunctional pattern going on in their life that is causing that aspect of their life to be distorted. This means they are disconnected from present moment experience. When you are disconnected from present moment experience, you are being controlled by your unconscious mind, which by definition is a hypnotic state.
The objective of the NLP Counselor in the NLP TimeLine process is to get you out of that trance state. In order to do that the Practitioner deliberately puts you in a guided state of hypnosis, in order to get the cooperation of the unconscious mind. The hypnotic state that is generated in an NLP TimeLine session is a very light state of trance, because the cooperation of the conscious mind (as well as the unconscious mind) is needed for the change to occur.
The result is that (through gaining that cooperation and effectively communicating a higher level of truth to the unconscious mind) the neuro-networks (which the unconscious mind is in charge of) reconfigure themselves, freeing you from a dysfunctional trance that you have been at effect of and that is not in alignment with truth and your highest interests. This allows you to be conscious, present, and undistorted in the areas that have been shifted.
