Tips For Applying Theatrical Makeup

By Judy Sullivan

Some people are hesitant about applying theatrical makeup. Indeed some men may be uncomfortable with this. However it is important because if it is not applied people can look very strange under the stage lighting so it is vital that people are aware of how to apply it properly.

Another good reason is that there is not always a makeup assistant available especially if it is a low budget or amateur production. Therefore it helps to know how to do it for yourself so that you can be confident that you will look right when you get onto the stage. Furthermore things can happen and you may need to do touchups at the last minute.

If you are a director then the major advantage is that you know more about the process. Therefore when you are looking over an actor you will know if they look right or if something needs to be adjusted. It is amazing how little details can make all the difference.

The kind of makeup depends on the context. For example the kind of lipstick you would apply for someone who is a burlesque dancer will be different from someone who is playing a dour librarian in an old fashioned library. Check reference pictures to be sure what you are getting is appropriate for the period and the characters that you wish for them to portray.

Before you apply anything remember to put moisturiser on first if you have dry skin or a toner if you have oily skin. You should then apply a powder using a plump brush to ensure that anything you apply stays on. If you have excess powder you can remove it by knocking the brush against a paper towel so that you do not apply too much powder by mistake and have more control over where it is applied.

With lipstick natural shades are best for men. However it can depend on the character. For example a darker shade may be associated with a villain or more seductive character. Equally it may also depend on the period a play is set in and whether or not the lipstick fits the tone. Applying light baby powder or having someone blow it towards you will help to keep the finished makeup in place.

Once you are finished do not forget to wash your hands! Aside from being hygienic there is also a big practical concern that you need to be aware of. In simple terms if you are not careful you could end up getting stains on your costume and that would definitely not go down well with the director or your fellow cast members!

There are various websites that can show you how to apply theatrical makeup. Video tutorials are ideal as this will make it easier to pause and look over how it is done. Look online for examples from professionals to help you develop your skills and prepare you for your next production.
