The Origins Of NLP And Why You Should Learn It

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is one of clunkiest names of a technology ever invented. If you've ever read "Dilbert," by Scott Adams, then you know how much fun they make of corporate-speak language that sounds like a bunch of nothing. Maybe when they first discovered NLP they figured it was so powerful that
they'd better give it a really lame name so people wouldn't abuse it.

All that aside, it's fascinating how they came up with the technology. For most if it, it wasn't something that was created or engineered. It was modeled. That means they took people who were really good at something, figured out how they did it, and then figured out how to teach it to other people.

That's one of the strange things about any kind of top tier behavior, be it marketing, sports, or playing an instrument. Most people who are really good at something don't really know why they're really good at it. Which makes them lousy couches or teachers if they try and explain it to other people.

So how did NLP get started? Well, have you ever been to a therapist? Or maybe you've watched "The Sopranos" on TV? The idea of modern therapy is pretty straightforward. You've got some kind of problem, so you go see a therapist. You talk about your problems. Ideally, (according to the therapist's business model) you'd go in there once a week for several years.

Their whole structure is based on the idea that you need a long, long time to solve your problems. They are deeply rooted, and it will take years just to figure out their origins.

But what if didn't have to be that way?

Well, for some gifted therapists, it didn't. They solved people's problems in only one or two sessions. They didn't need years and years of mindless talking about "how do you feel about that?" to solve people's problems.

So these two guys, one a computer scientist and another a linguist, decided to reverse engineer the language and strategies that these genius therapists were using. Once they did, they realized they could teach other people how to use these same strategies.

It's pretty simple, really. Establish rapport. Elicit the problem. Use some advanced linguistic wizardry to help the patient solve the problem. Get them to imagine the future to make sure the solution really works, and that it wouldn't backfire. And presto, the patient is cured in a couple hours. No more problems.

If you have ever been in sales, you know the above description matches perfectly with an ideal sales meeting. Establish rapport. Find out what the customer wants. Use language to show them how your product can help them. Future pace to make sure they won't change their mind. Problem solved.

It's no wonder, then, that after only a few years, this technology, NLP, that was designed for therapy was used for sales and marketing. With some amazing results.

If you're selling something to somebody, or trying to persuade somebody to do something, don't you think it's important to learn a little NLP, despite how goofy the name is? Can you imagine how it will make life a lot easier?
