Benefits Of Using Wire EDM Cutting

By Joanna Walsh

Materials or hard metals that are hard to cut with old-fashioned techniques are often cut by utilizing a process known as electrical discharge machining. Still, such process has a limitation just like it can only work with electrically conductive materials.

It is best to use this method for carving delicate cavities or intricate contours that other carving tools such as an end mill or a grinder cannot. Wire EDM cutting is usually used to carve kovar, inconel, carbide, titanium, hardened tool-steel and hastalloy. Spark machining is another name used for this method because metal is removed with the help of repetitive electrical discharges it produces. The flow of these discharges are between the piece of material being carved and an electrode.

A continuously flowing liquid will flush away the small amount of material that is removed from the workpiece. A series of successively deeper craters in the workpiece will be created by their discharges until the final shape is produced. Electrical discharge machining methods come in two primary types such as ram and wire. The main difference between these two is the electrode used to perform the carving. Traditional tools are used for a graphite electrode when it comes to the usual ram EDM application.

The specially-carved electrode will then be slowly fed into the workpiece, attached to a ram and connected to the power source. Majority of the time, the entire carving operation is performed while it subsides in a fluid. The purpose of the fluid is to flush the material away, serves as a coolant to reduce the heat affected area to prevent possible workpiece damage and serves as a conductor for the current to pass between the workpiece and the electrode.

One of its roles is serving as an electrode in the procedure. Special brass cables are frequently employed. As the discharges shape the work piece, this is placed inside the material in a slow speed. The procedure is frequently performed by employing bath water.

You will become aware that the metal intended to be cut isn't touching the wire especially if you observe it under a microscope. Tiny amount of materials are eliminated as well as allowed to have movement in the workpiece. Its direction is often controlled by a computer for complex shapes to be produced.

In most instances, this kind of process is utilized to create molds as well as dies. Right now, it is known as one of the standard methods to produce prototypes as well as produce parts just like those in low quantity applications.

It cannot be denied that traditional carving are limited to softer materials. On the other hand, electrical discharge machining need not sacrifice tolerance just to carve through hardened materials. In addition, this method gets the job done faster. The reason behind this is that the carving speeds are really fast. As a result, ninety percent of the jobs can be completed in only twenty-four hours. At present, there are a lot of new carving equipment and tools. However, electric discharge machines are definitely one of the most beneficial among them because of the above mentioned reasons.
