The Benefits Of Eradicating Racism In Professional Sports

By Enid Hinton

There is a famous saying that in periods of unwanted circumstances, a little show of affection can change the situation positively. On other occasions, it seems that a great deal of love is needed to influence certain conditions, conditions that are highly technical and affect a great deal of people like racism in professional sports. Issues of racial discrimination should be hinged or linked to characters and it should be viewed with a wider scope and tackled adequately.

Racism has dominated the headlines in sporting activities around the globe. From international soccer where it is always recurring to its cradle the NFL, NBA and MLB where cases of racial discrimination have become a social norm, it is speedily grabbing airwaves. The ideas and opinions of prominent figures on this issue are capable of creating comments and counter-comments that can cause a societal impact that is highly unpredictable.

And it has a deep meaning for lots of people who currently go to the public to make comments on what they feel are their own conception of what racism is or cannot be. Every league requires leaders to be in unison against all forms of bigotry and hatred. And every little action by any person can lead to an impact that resonates throughout a nation. That single denouncement of a bigot by that single personality has the impact of causing a ripple through the consciousness of a nation.

Shunning the products and services provided by a firm owned by a racist may appear little but it can spread information as fast as wildfire creating a stereotype that even the young generation can follow. Sportsmen should form an integrated front and fight for players' welfare and ensure that any injustice suffered by players in relation to racial discrimination should be taken up seriously by all and sundry.

These types of problems are very uncertain as the extent of damage heightens in the hearts of the people. It can be best described as the ripples of waves on an ocean. You can commence it, but it always expand beyond expectations. This all begins with an unhappy voice voicing out his frustration and then it can develop unpredictably. The mass media performs a crucial role in disseminating and interpreting the information to members of the society.

Once the people have been informed, comments can be made, opinions can be shared, and decisions can be taken. Decisions like the boycott of a bigots' products and services; decisions like the suspension of a so-called leader in the sport; decisions like the investigation of the statements and the inevitable blacklisting of the personality's immediate and remote business interests. The rest of the ripple effect that continues is unpredictable.

Racism is an act that leaves its footprints and destroys the social status, splendor and power acquired by its victims turning them into down-and-out members of the society searching for an opportunity to regain their stance in the society. They are being stereotyped by relatives; friends and associates making them unwanted and rejected in the society.

We are all required to be vocal when we fall victim to racism in our different sport of choice. However, the in-significant affection may just play the crucial role of solving this problem. Just maybe.
