How To Combat Ageism In The Workplace

By Christine King

When it comes to applying for a certain position, most people only apply for the position if they know that they are suitable or qualified to handle that role. Ultimately, they may be 100 people that are qualified to take on one specific at all. Ultimately though it is the decision of the company as to who they choose to hire. In most cases if you get older people applying for the specific position, the younger people always chosen and accepted while old people are declined. The specific practice is referred to as ageism in the workplace.

Ages and basically affects people who are above a certain age. When you apply for the job certain information is required of you that you must provide. One of those details is your age. So ultimately irrespective of how experienced you are, you may be declined purely based on your age.

So what basically happens is that a position is advertised and then you get a number of applicants applying for that specific role. Ultimately, the applicants will range and different in age and qualifications as well. Ultimately, when it comes to choosing the most suitable candidate, most companies go with the younger applicant. This could be due to stereotypes related to growing older.

So this happens across the board irrespective of what. Happens in so many different countries spread across the world. Ultimately it also takes place in different types of companies irrespective of what industry it is. So it is not something that is specific to in specific industry or type of work.

It has been happening for decades and it is simply a stereotype. However there are certain laws that also encourage the stereotype one of them being the retirement age law. However, this can all be changed with time. So basically doesn't matter where or when it takes place all that matters is that it is still being practiced even told this day.

That is why companies have this approach to all the people is because of the negative stereotype that has been created in the minds of people when it comes to aging persons. Ultimately for some reason older people acting as unhealthier, more unfit, and sickly. So for this reason companies would prefer to hire younger people as opposed to hiding older people.

While younger people may not necessarily be healthier than older people, because everyone is individuals. The fact that there is a stigma attached to older people or middle age people is what basically prevents them from actually getting the job. While this may seem like a fairly ridiculous argument, the fact of the matter is that it does happen in reality.

So if you are ever faced with this predicament, you definitely should fight for your rights. If you know that you are able to do a job more competently than the next individual who is being hired, you should basically fight for your rights. In most countries the mandatory retirement age law has been abolished, and some countries that even coming out with anti-discrimination laws that are preventing companies from declining you for the position based on your age only.
