Facts About Postpartum Depression Denver

By Dorothy Thomas

The birth of a child can trigger various powerful emotions which range from excitement and joy to anxiety and fear. In some cases it might result in something that is not very expected, depression. There are mothers who after birth will experience mood swings, have crying spells and experience difficulty sleeping. These conditions will be experienced just a few days after delivery. When dealing with postpartum depression Denver residents need to understand what the condition entails.

The symptoms which are experienced during and post pregnancy are the same. Some of the commonest ones are extreme sadness, continuous crying, problems with decision making and restlessness. There is also possibility if appetite loss or in some people, excessive eating. These will lead to either weight gain or loss which is not intended. Also, the affected tend to lose interest in activities they previously enjoyed.

It is important to understand what causes depression after childbirth. Postpartum depression, PPD, is as a result of environmental, emotional and hormonal factors. Genetic factors also play a role. There are women who may feel responsible for having the condition, which is not the case. People will normally have this condition if they had depression when they were expectant, or they were anxious during that period. Other factors that contribute to it are physical exhaustion during birth and the emotional adjustment of becoming a parent.

Treatments for PPD are similar to what is used when one is depressed during pregnancy. If the symptoms are only mild, the doctor will recommend regular visits during which they monitor the condition. In more severe cases however, the options available are talk therapy or medications. The specific medications used are antidepressants. Counseling can be done on the woman only, one-on-one or in some cases it is administered to various people as a group. In other instances, it is done collectively to the couple.

When there is the use of antidepressants, they work by balancing brain chemicals that regulate moods. There are various antidepressants that can be used and the most appropriate should be prescribed by the doctor. In the event of side effects during treatment, they are expected to disappear after a short while.

There are women who may have severe PPD which does not respond to either medications or talk therapy. If this is the case, the healthcare provider might suggest a procedure known as electroconvulsive therapy, ECT. With this treatment, there is passing of small electrical currents through the brain. This is done when the patient is under general anesthesia. The electrical stimulation causes chemical changes within the brain which relieve depression.

Those affected should be able to cope. One of the ways is by being good to yourself. One is expected to sleep well, eat well and try not to feel guilty. Having the condition does not mean one is a bad mother. On the same note, it does not help matters when one demands so much from themselves. The treatment should be more effective if one takes a step at a time.

For men whose partners have PPD, the should offer them maximum support. They should not judge them in any way. Such men will also need a lot of rest because it is also demanding on their end.
