Factors To Consider When Looking For An Executive Coach

By Edna Booker

Having a mentor can help to propel you to your next stage in life. The extra insight and guidance that they give you can be quite instrumental in helping you become a better person and improve your career prospects. Since there are so many coaches that are available, it may be hard for you to decide who to specifically select to mentor you. Following some guidelines will increase your chances of finding the right executive coach, who is a good match for you.

Before hiring someone, research more about who they are. This includes where they went to school, where they have worked before and their family life. This will help you know if they are the kind of person that you would really want to work with. It would help if you selected someone who has been or is in the same industry as you are in. This increases the chances that they will be able to understand you and give you good guidance.

It is important to have a good rapport with your mentor. This is the only way you will be able to share with them freely and approach them when you need advice. You do not necessarily have to be close friends with the person you choose, but it is important that you have a respectful and trusting relationship.

Your mentor should be patient with you and have good communication skills. You can assess whether they have these characteristics when you are talking to them for the first time. Observe how they conduct the conversation and if they are interested in what you have to say.

Find someone who is available for the time period that you need their services. This means that they can make time to meet with you and they can honor their contract to the end. You may want to work with a professional for a couple of months or years, so let them know right from the start how long you expect your relationship to last.

It may be necessary for your mentor to submit a report of how you are fairing on to your boss. This requires that the mentor have a method of evaluating you. There are some tools which they can employ to enable them assess you better. However, the main way they should assess you is through their interaction with you.

Find someone who is self-confident and has a strong personality. They will be able to challenge and guide you better and cause you to want to become a better person as their enthusiasm will rub off on you. Avoid someone who will be too timid to correct you if they think you are doing something wrong.

Someone with some kind of formal training in mentoring will be better prepared to handle you than someone who hasn't received any kind of training. So ask your potential mentor if they have been trained. It I also a good idea to talk to other people they have mentored before to get an idea of what to expect from the coach.
