The Work Of A Virtual Administrative Assistant

By Freda Watts

A number of people are seeing the benefits of working from home, and companies are also finding that hiring homeworkers could be cheaper and more practical. A person who desires to work at home could become a virtual administrative assistant for businesses who deal with all kinds of products or services. They will be hired on a contractual basis. This person will also be responsible for their own taxes.

Hiring a person that works from home is beneficial to a company in several ways. They do not have to have extra space within their offices to house another employee, and do not have to buy extra equipment for the worker, such as a computer and printer. A VA can also live in any part of the world, and still perform the duties required by the company. Nowadays, there are many ways that money can be transferred between different countries. A company can also more easily choose the number of hours they would like their VA to work, and will only pay for those hours.

All duties of an online secretary are performed from a home PC or laptop. Each business will require different types of work from their virtual secretary, but in general, it includes word processing tasks, email processing tasks and possibly scheduling and electronic filing. Transcription work is often completed by a homeworker as well.

A computer and a reliable connection to the internet will be required. You must have an email account, and may be required to communicate with the employer in several other ways via the internet as well. Different positions will require different types of equipment. You may need a land line phone and fax connection, and if documents must be printed, a high quality printer as well. Photocopying and scanning work may also be required.

A home office is ideal for someone who works online, however, any other area of the home could be considered. It should be a quiet place, away from distractions, with space for the necessary equipment. Working from home has many benefits, one of which is the saving of funds usually devoted to commuting.

A person starting in this sort of career may not have to study for years in order to qualify. The qualifications required will depend on the tasks that need to be performed for the company. Some may require that you have a four-year degree, while others will be happy with just a high school diploma. The main thing is that you can fulfill their expectations.

The skills required by an online secretary are often similar to those needed by an office worker who performs tasks at a brick and mortar establishment. A few skills that are beneficial include a fast and accurate typing ability, excellent written communication skills and a reasonable knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and database computer applications. The person should be capable of a wide variety of tasks, and work of a high quality.

Someone who would like to become a virtual administrative assistant will find career opportunities online. For most offerings, you will need to submit a resume. Decide which type of work will suit you best, and the number of hours you can work per day.
