During Christian Counseling Minneapolis MN Believers Can Grow Closer To God

By Mark Graham

The enormous pressure and fast pace of modern life often cause people high levels of anxiety and stress. Some people feel that they simply cannot cope with all the demands made upon them. Eventually, some people will develop psychological disorders. In most cases, therapy can help such people to regain balance in their lives but unfortunately far too many people still think that any form of psychological therapy is a sure sign of weakness. With Christian counseling Minneapolis MN therapists try to help believers to find answers in their faith.

Secular therapy is generally based upon the principles of psychology. There are, however, therapists that base their interventions on a wide variety of theories and beliefs, ranging from vague, mystic belief systems to primitive customs to modern cognitive science theories. Christian therapy, however, is wholly Bible based and focus on the faith in God the father, God the son and God the holy ghost.

Faith based therapists believe that the answer to all the problems of life on earth van only come from God, who is almighty and who can do anything. Their approach to therapy is therefore to help their patients to find the answers to their problems by studying the Bible, by renewing their faith and trust in God and by committing themselves to sin no more.

Faith based therapists certainly believe that patients will get their answers from the Bible, but this does not mean that they do not employ the principles and techniques of modern psychological science. Many faith based are fully qualified psychologists and will even recommend that patients consult with a psychiatrist that is able to prescribe appropriate drugs. Christianity has never denied the value and validity of modern science.

Many faith based therapists specialize in specific fields. Some focus on relationships and marriage counselling, others on trauma therapy and others on behavioural disorders such as substance abuse. In most cases therapy consist of an initial interview, followed by one on one sessions and in many cases, group therapy as well. Patients have to understand that therapy often requires many sessions over a long period of time.

Just because the therapy that they undergo is faith based does not mean that patients can expect the therapist to perform a miracle or expect that the therapist will simply tell them which passages to study in the Bible in order to find a quick solution to their problems. The task of the counsellor is to guide the patient towards understanding his feelings and problems and to then discover the cure for himself.

Counselling based on religious faith has many critics. Some of these critics are of the opinion that there is no place for religion in science, not even the science of psychology. Others argue that religion is nothing but a form of brain washing. They believe that these counsellors are misleading their patients when they propose that the answers to their problems can be found in the Bible.

Supporters of faith based therapy argue that Christianity is a religion based on love, mercy and tolerance, with eternal life as the end reward. There is no harm when a troubled person seeks a solution for his problems within his faith. After all, they believe that God created mankind with free choice.
